Overview

The history of the former inn provides an example of a house divided between two owners, something which was once very common in Nagold. Until the beginning of the 20th Century, the house belonged to two families. They were not just bakers, but also clothmakers, day laborers and carpenters.

The first owners in 1743 were Conrad Reich, who was a farmer, and his son Georg Reich, who was a baker. In 1808 a distillery of spirits was operated as well as the bakery. The house was rebuilt after a fire destroyed it in 1826.

From the middle of the 19th Century on there was a bakery with an alley public-house. A public-house was permitted to sell food, like sausage and baked goods, and drink. Wine or beer could be filled in a pitcher brought by the customer. Since 1898 the building has belonged to one family.

In 1977 the building was restored. Now it is home of the Senior Citizens’ Meeting Place of the City of Nagold. It was completely renovated in 2004.

Interesting Facts

“Mohraköpfle”

Nagold followed the church tradition of naming historical inns after the symbols of the four evangelists: “Engel” (angel for Matthew), “Löwe” (lion for Mark), “Ochsen” (ox or steer for Luke) and “Adler” (eagle for John). In catholic regions, inns are often named “Mohren” (Moor), “Dreikönig” (Three Kings) and “Kreuz” (Cross.) This was not a tradition in predominantly protestant Nagold. Mohren Inn was famous for its little chocolate-covered marshmallows, which are called Mohraköpfle in the Swabian dialect.
