The Rhine Gate in 1885.

General information:

“Rheintor” (the Rhine Gate). Newly erected in 1678 according to plans by Jacques Tarade, the French master architect of forts, on the site of the old “Rheintor” from the 13th century. The west façade is richly decorated with figures and coats-of-arms. Bridge Gate until 1700, then barracks and military hospital. In the 19th century wallpaper and tobacco factory, 1893-1903 barracks, 1927-39 “Kaiserstuhlmuseum”. Residential buildings after 1945. Museum of the town’s history since 1991.
