Overview

Johann Philipp Deublin was a butcher, an innkeeper and the mayor when he built the “Posthotel zur Sonne” (Post Hotel to the Sun) in 1697. It was one of the first large buildings outside the Upper Gate.

In the 18th Century there was already a royal route for stagecoaches, which led from Stuttgart through Nagold and continued on to Freudenstadt and Strasbourg. In 1807 King Friedrich established a post office in the inn. A stall for changing horses was added in 1812, which sometimes kept up to 50 horses. The post office moved to a new location in 1898.

Paul and Emma Luz turned the inn into a hotel. It was renovated in 1906, when running water and heating were installed. Professor Robert Nachbauer from Stuttgart exposed the half-timbering in Franconian style, designed the façade and the artistically significant inn sign, which was constructed by art smith Baldenhofer in Freudenstadt.

After taking over the hotel in 1950, Karl-Friedrich and Lore Scholl once again brought it up to date. Until it was sold in 1984, Hotel Post belonged to one family through many generations, even if the names varied: Deublin, Gschwindt, Luz and Scholl.
