Overview

The Stone House is probably the oldest house in Nagold. It was a defensible building with its core dating from the 12th or 13th Century. The medieval stone wall was also built at this time. In the northern plank room there are several historical details: a plank wall dated 1409 and wall painting from the Renaissance.

The Stone House served the Castle Hohennagold and was probably the seat of “Knight Henry of Nagold”, who was mentioned in 1258. Until the 16th Century the Stone House was the center of the Maierhof, which administered the agricultural products.

During the 18th and 19th Centuries the Freythaler Family, who were dyers, used the Stone House as their home and warehouse. In the 1980s the City of Nagold purchased and renovated the building. Nagold’s museum and archives have been here since 1989.

Interesting Facts

Once a small castle with a moat?

Because of its proximity to the Nagold River, the Stone House could have been surrounded by water. The building, as seen today, was joined to the medieval stone wall at a much later time.

Knight Henry of Nagold

was a minister to Count Gottfried of Calw and served the Counts of Hohenberg. In 1253 and 1258 he donated and sold several pieces of property as well as his farm in Nagold to Kirchberg Convent (Sulz am Neckar), which was founded by the Counts of Hohenberg.

The Maierhof

belonged to the lordship and owned extensive fields and meadows, barns, stalls and probably forests. After the Thirty Years War (1618-1648), the Maierhof was no longer profitable. The antiquated system ended in 1693 and the land was sold to the people of Nagold.
