Welcome to Eltville

Our wine, sparkling wine and rose town Eltville am Rhein is a modern small town in the idyllically situated Rheingau region, world famous not least for its first-class wines. There are things to see and experience and a lot more besides.

At the foot of the Rheingau Mountains between Rüdesheim and Wiesbaden, the capital of Hesse, lies Eltville am Rhein, the town of wine, sparkling wine and roses, on a 90-meter-high terrace. It is an endearing small town that can look back on a great past.

Fifteen kilometers upstream on the other side of the Rhine rises the golden Mainz, whose history is closely linked to Eltville. It was the archbishops of Mainz who chose this small, dreamy spot as their preferred residence in the 14th and 15th centuries.

Like all towns on the Rhine, Eltville was oriented toward the river until the 19th century. It was the main traffic and trade route. The historic town center forms a quadrangle formerly surrounded by a town wall. The banks of the Rhine with its historic buildings and the remains of the town fortifications present themselves today as a work of architectural art created over more than seven centuries by sovereigns, church, nobility and citizens. In a forty-year-long, successful fight against the construction of a bypass road directly on the banks of the Rhine, it was possible to preserve this unique situation on the Middle Rhine.
