Overview

After the half-timbering was exposed and the hotel redesigned in art nouveau style in 1906, art smith Baldenhofer in Freudenstadt made the artistically significant inn sign, which was designed by Professor Robert Nachbauer of Stuttgart. The elements of style go back to the formal language of baroque and thus to the time this hotel was built.

House signs are advertising. Their pictures are universally understandable symbols. A golden sun, for example, symbolizes the life-giving power of the sun. This symbol was often used in regions with long winters. Here a golden sun reminds us of the original name of the hotel: Post Hotel to the Sun. The stagecoach and the post horn remind of the former post route.

Mr. Reinhold and Mrs. Heike Fleckenstein of Nagold supported the restauration of the inn sign in 2015. The sign, which measures about five by five meters, was freed from corrosion and newly gilded.

Interesting Facts

Historical house signs

Even the Romans and the Greeks advertised with house signs. The signs, however, became really popular during the Middle Ages. With the coming of the baroque period, the signs changed from a simple triangle form to very elaborate dynamically curved forms with decorative elements, rocailles, vine work and flower branches. The gilded symbols and vine work were an eye-catcher from far away and indicated the quality of the house.

From the 16th Century until the end of the 19th Century only large and reputable inns and honest innkeepers were allowed to have such a sign. The sign thus shows the guests that they are protected here.
