Historical house signs
Even the Romans and the Greeks advertised with house signs. The signs, however, became really popular during the Middle Ages. With the coming of the baroque period, the signs changed from a simple triangle form to very elaborate dynamically curved forms with decorative elements, rocailles, vine work and flower branches. The gilded symbols and vine work were an eye-catcher from far away and indicated the quality of the house.
From the 16th Century until the end of the 19th Century only large and reputable inns and honest innkeepers were allowed to have such a sign. The sign thus shows the guests that they are protected here.
